There are three options when signing up with the Music Teachers’ Board: Organisation (e.g. school, hub, college etc), Individual Music Teacher or Individual User (e.g. parent or learner).

All of these, once signed up, can enter candidates, record and submit exams and/or make general purchases.

Organisations or Individual Music Teachers, once signed up, will be assigned a centre number and become approved MTB exam centres.

What are exam centres?

Being an MTB exam centre allows you to oversee and conduct MTB examinations for your candidates.

An MTB exam can either be recorded directly by the candidate/candidate’s parents in video or conducted with an exam centre.

The exam centre can conduct the exam (remotely or in person) guiding the candidate through the various elements of the exam and by verifying the candidate’s identity. Where a centre conducts the exam the centre will receive the marksheet via email.

During an exam entry you will be asked Is the exam being conducted with a teacher/centre?

  • Selecting ‘Yes’ means: there will be a teacher/centre representative present during the recording of the exam, either in person or remotely to verify your identity. The teacher/centre will receive the marksheet for this exam. You will need the centre number of the teacher/organisation overseeing the exam at this stage.
  • Selecting ‘No’ means: there will not be a teacher/centre representative present during the recording of the exam. The candidate will receive the marksheet for this exam.

Your centre number can be found on your, ‘my account’ page on the website.

Will my exams be in audio or video?

  • All performance exams are conducted in video.
  • All Practical exams conducted without an approved MTB centre will be assigned to a video exam, as there will be no centre overseeing the exam to verify the candidate’s identity.
  • Practical exams conducted with a centre will be assigned to a video or audio format depending on what your assigned centre format is.

Assigned Centre Formats:

UK centres: are automatically assigned as an audio approved centre and there are a number of additional verification fields in the sign up form such as the referee field.  UK centres can request to be a video centre after sign up.

International Centres: are automatically assigned as a video approved centre.  They have a shorter sign up form but on the sign up page there is the option to download the relevant audio verification form to apply to become an audio centre after sign up.  Internationally an audio centre status will only typically be granted for exams taking place in educational organisations, such as schools.

Where will certificates be sent?

A centre can select whether they wish to always receive the exam certificates or if they prefer them to go directly to the learner.  Upon sign up the learner option is automatically selected but you can go to your ‘my account’ page to change this option.

When entering an exam if there is no teacher/centre present there will be the opportunity to enter the certificate postage address. If the exam is being conducted with a teacher/centre who has the learner option selected then the certificate postage address fields will appear. However, if the centre has requested for the certificates to go directly to them, then the certificate postage fields will not appear.

Guidance for Centres:

Organisations

Exam entry: The organisation can make the entries & payments for exams or they can ask the candidate/candidate’s parents to make the entry and payment for the exam directly.  The organisation centre number will be required when entering the exam.

Conducting & submitting the exam: The organisation can either conduct the exam (in person or remotely) or ask the candidate to take the exam without them present. The easiest way to conduct an exam is to download the MTB app to record and submit the exam on a phone or tablet.  The app has no login requirements and can be used to record & submit the exam by the organisation representative/teacher or by the candidate/candidate’s parents. The device with the app should always be in the room with the candidate as they take the exam. You can also record the exam on any device and submit the exam via our website.

Marksheet: When entering an exam you will need to enter a centre number (if conducting the exam with a centre). The email address associated with the centre number will receive the marksheet. For ease of administration some organisations instead ask each of their teachers to sign up as an Individual Music Teacher and use their own centre number on submission. The exam mark sheet and results would then go directly to the teachers’ email address.*

*If you wish to track organisational statistics with this model then please ensure your teachers list your organisation’s centre ID in the reference section when signing up. Statistics on organisation entries & results can be made available on request.

Individual Music Teachers

Exam entry: The teacher can make the entries & payments for exams or they can ask the candidate/candidate’s parents to make the entry and payment for the exam directly.  The teacher’s centre number will be required when entering the exam.

Conducting & submitting the exam: The teacher can either conduct the exam (in person or remotely) or ask the candidate to take the exam without them present. The easiest way to conduct an exam is to download the MTB app to record and submit the exam on a phone or tablet.  The app has no login requirements and can be used to record & submit the exam by the teacher or by the candidate/candidate’s parents. The device with the app should always be in the room with the candidate as they take the exam. You can also record the exam on any device and submit the exam via our website.

Marksheet: When entering an exam you will need to enter a centre number (if conducting the exam with a centre). The email address associated with the centre number will receive the marksheet. If a teacher works at an organisation and also has private students then they may wish to use the organisation’s centre number to send results directly to the organisation and their own centre number for their private students.
